The Points of
History
Arms and
Armor Through the Middle Ages
Richly dressed in period costume, Barry Corrigan and MaryAnn
Zeffer separate the myths of ancient warfare from the
facts. In an informative and often humorous presentation,
they use a large collection of ancient weapons and armor to
illustrate how weapons changed throughout history and how armor
developed to provide protection against them.

Presenter's
Approach:
Barry and Mary Ann present an eye opening, fun filled look at
history. With grace, humor and good taste, they illustrate the
reasons behind the historical development of arms and armor, covering a
large time span but focusing mostly on the Middle Ages.
Participants have ample opportunity to voice their many questions and
also have the privilege of getting to experience first hand the
actual weight, size and feel of many of the display pieces. Note: This is an opportunity for children to
safely
experience the past. All "hands-on" pieces are unsharpened,
handled only with close supervision.
Results:
-
Participants will gain a better
understanding of what weapons and warfare in the Middle ages were really
like in contrast to how Hollywood portrays them
-
Through the hands-on process, participants can gain first
hand experience about how heavy armor
is, see the actual length and weight of various swords, handle chain mail, and
even heft a shield
-
Participants will learn that the discovery of different
metals changed the style and usage of weapons,
and how armor subsequently had to adapt to these technological
changes
