"EN GUARDE!"
Live
Fencing Demonstrations
In this interactive program, discover the building
blocks of Olympic-style fencing - safety,
footwork, distance, timing and strategy.
Participants
do not actually fence, but learn by
participating in a series of games and drills.
Cooperation, communication, awareness,
reaction, decision-making skills and composure
are each skills that improve by participating in this
sport. Participants
have fun, but are also expected to
demonstrate respect and awareness of safety. The program ends with a beautifully
presented demonstration of skill as the
instructors engage in a live fencing bout. What
are people saying about this program?

Presenter's
Approach:
The Fencing Exchange instructors are equally comfortable presenting an
interactive fencing workshop for children or a stimulating lecture and
demonstration for residents of a personal care home. Their
programs are intellectually stimulating and visually
exciting. Where else can you see a live demonstration of swordplay? In
all of their programs, safety is stressed as the highest priority.
Discipline and respect are demanded of participants in interactive
workshops and the exemplary behavior of all participants reflects the
care taken by the instructors to stress safety. In addition to
demonstrating the fascinating art of fencing, the instructors will also
present interesting relevant historical information pertaining
to the development of fencing and detail the theories and techniques involved in
fencing. Audience participation in questions and answers is always
encouraged. This program can also be tailored for a variety of curriculum
components including history, literature, health & PE,
and others.

About
the Presenter:
John Proctor and Kim Glemboski founded The Fencing Exchange on
Lackawanna Avenue in Scranton in 1996. The school teaches both
classical and modern style fencing to enthusiasts of all ages.
Prior to opening The Fencing Exchange, John and Kim taught fencing at
local high schools, colleges, and community centers for many years. The
two received their training and certifications from the United States
Fencing Association's Coaches College at the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs, Colorado. They continue to periodically receive
instruction there as well as attending various other professional
workshops and seminars to further their education. The
Fencing Exchange is heavily involved in the promotion of fencing within
the community, both by offering instruction and competitive
opportunities to their students and by providing educational
demonstrations to schools, businesses, and community organizations.
What
People Are Saying:
"This
was just so great! To see how you came to our school and worked
with the adults and kids together was just fantastic. We learned
so much and everyone seemed to have a great time!"
~ Elementary school educator "To
my great surprise, I have watched my daughter thrive in this beautiful
sport of ancient weapons and courtly manners. The Fencing Exchange,
where my daughter Margaret now continues to eagerly go for lessons, is
filled with boys and girls as eager as she to be there. It has
amazed me to watch children, often with that age driven awkwardness,
display such poise and self-assuredness. Perhaps it is the
instructor's emphasis on sportsmanship and strict adherence to decorum,
or the physical and mental challenges of the sport... but whatever it
is... it works. I wholeheartedly encourage any parent to or
educator to introduce their children to this wonderful sport."
~ Margaret's mom, Jane Mallonee
