The romantic and sonorous classical guitar and how it differs from other guitars is the focus of this  lecture/demonstration by Charles Truitt.  The classical guitarist and educator explores a bit of the history, style and composers of the guitar, its construction and materials, and also demonstrates various techniques of playing.  Mr. Truitt also addresses the question "Why is it Classical?".

Presenter's Approach:
Mr. Truitt will discuss various topics relating to the classical guitar, show the instrument (possibly along with other types of guitars for comparison), and play selections of music to illustrate various points.  His warm approach invites interaction with the audience, such as questions and comments.

Results:
Participants will:

  • Understand the classical guitar and how it differs from other types of guitars

  • Know the types of music and playing techniques associated with classical guitar

  • Enjoy an intimate demonstration of musical skill by an accomplished classical guitarist and music educator

Price Range:
$300
Plus travel expenses for locations outside of a 30 mile radius.

Logistical Factors:
Hosting organization must provide the following:

  • a well lit area measuring 6' x 6' minimum for Mr. Truitt  
           (the area can be elevated, but is not a necessity)

  • a straight-backed, armless chair  (preferably not a folding chair)

  • ample room for audience seating

  • a sound system (depending upon group size and room acoustics)

  • if host does not have a sound system, an AC outlet will be needed

About the Presenter:
CHARLES TRUITT began studying guitar in 1965.  He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance from the Hartt School of Music, and a Master of Arts in musicology from Marywood University.  His teachers have included the world renowned Oscar Ghiglia and Michael Lorimer (master classes at Hartt), Richard Provost (Hartt), Eli Kassner (University of Toronto), and the late Bunyan Webb (Chautauqua).  He has been listed in Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Entertainment, and The International Who’s Who in Music and Musicians.  He is a member of the Society for Music Theory, the Music Teachers National Association, the Guitar Foundation of America, The College Music Society, and the national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda.  Mr. Truitt has been a member of the music faculty of Marywood University since 1980, and has also served on the faculties of Baptist Bible College, Lycoming College, and Alfred University.
